Wild Mint

Wild Mint

Wild Mint (Mentha arvensis)

Plant Description:
Wild Mint is a perennial herbaceous plant with square stems, fragrant green leaves, and clusters of small, pale purple to pink flowers that bloom in summer. Its strong, fresh scent and spreading growth habit make it easily recognizable. The plant spreads vigorously by rhizomes, forming dense colonies.

Grow Zone:
Hardy in USDA Zones 3–9. It can grow in a variety of climates but prefers cooler to temperate regions.

Height and Width:
Typically grows 1–2 feet tall and can spread indefinitely through underground runners, often covering large areas if not contained.

Uses:
Used as a culinary herb for teas, salads, desserts, and garnishes. It is also valued for its medicinal properties, often used in herbal remedies for digestion and relaxation. Additionally, it attracts pollinators and can be used as a fragrant groundcover or in naturalized plantings.

Native Range:
Native to North America, Europe, and parts of Asia, where it commonly grows along stream banks, wetlands, and moist meadows.

Sun and Water Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, rich soil. It requires regular watering, especially in dry periods, to maintain vigorous growth. While tolerant of a variety of soil types, it performs best in consistently damp conditions. Containment, such as planting in pots or garden beds with barriers, is recommended to control its spread.
