Purple Heart or Tradescantia pallida 'Purpurea,' is a striking trailing or spreading perennial known for its deep purple, lance-shaped foliage. It produces small, three-petaled pink to lavender flowers that contrast beautifully with the rich purple leaves. This fast-growing plant is popular for its vibrant color and ability to thrive in various conditions.

Native Range

Native to Mexico, Purple Wandering Jew is well adapted to warm, subtropical, and tropical climates. It is commonly grown as a groundcover or container plant in temperate regions.

Growing Zones

  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 7–11 (perennial in warm climates, annual or indoor plant in colder zones)

Size

  • Height: 12 to 18 inches

  • Width: 12 to 36 inches (trails and spreads easily)

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. More sunlight enhances its deep purple coloration.

  • Soil: Well-draining, moderately fertile soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0-7.0).

  • Watering: Water regularly but allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Drought-tolerant once established.

  • Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity but adapts well to drier conditions.

  • Temperature: Grows best in temperatures between 60-80°F (16-27°C); not frost-tolerant.

  • Fertilizer: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.

Propagation

  • Easily propagated by stem cuttings in soil or water. Simply snip a healthy stem and place it in moist soil or water until roots develop.

Uses

  • Groundcover: Ideal for covering bare spots in warm climates.

  • Container Gardening: Perfect for hanging baskets and patio pots.

  • Houseplant: Grows well indoors with bright indirect light.

  • Erosion Control: Helps stabilize soil in sloped areas.

  • Pollinator-Friendly: Attracts bees and other pollinators when in bloom.
