Virginia Sweetspire
Virginia Sweetspire
Virginia Sweetspire (Itea virginica)
Plant Description:
Virginia Sweetspire is a deciduous shrub valued for its arching branches, fragrant white flower spikes, and striking red to burgundy fall foliage. The flowers bloom in late spring to early summer, attracting pollinators. It has a dense, rounded growth habit and provides multi-season interest in the landscape.
Grow Zone:
Hardy in USDA Zones 5–9, thriving in a variety of soil and moisture conditions.
Height and Width:
Typically grows 3–5 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide, though some cultivars can be slightly more compact.
Uses:
Ideal for borders, foundation plantings, naturalized areas, rain gardens, and mass plantings. Its tolerance of wet soils makes it a good choice for erosion control along streams and ponds. It also provides excellent habitat for pollinators and wildlife.
Native Range:
Native to the southeastern United States, commonly found along stream banks, floodplains, and moist woodlands.
Sun and Water Requirements:
Grows well in full sun to partial shade, though flowering and fall color are most vibrant in sunnier locations. Prefers moist, well-drained soil but tolerates wet or periodically flooded conditions. Regular watering is beneficial during dry periods, especially in the first growing season.
