Verbena, Homestead Purple

Verbena, Homestead Purple

LSU Super Plant

Plant name: Verbena ‘Homestead Purple’
Scientific name: Glandularia canadensis ‘Homestead Purple’

Plant description:
Verbena ‘Homestead Purple’ is a low-growing, spreading perennial known for its vigorous habit and long flowering season. It forms a broad mat of branching stems that root along the ground, creating dense coverage and a soft, trailing effect. This variety is valued for its durability, extended bloom performance, and ability to provide consistent color in borders and large-scale plantings.

Flower description:
Clusters of rich purple flowers cover the plant from spring into fall, forming rounded heads that attract pollinators and add vibrant color to the landscape. Each bloom cluster sits just above the foliage, creating a layered appearance that enhances visual depth. Continuous flowering keeps displays lively throughout the growing season.

Leaf description:
Leaves are finely textured, slightly toothed, and medium green, giving the plant a soft, airy look. The foliage forms a dense mat that helps suppress weeds while providing a strong backdrop for the vivid flower clusters.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Semi-evergreen in mild climates; may die back during colder periods and return with warmer temperatures.

USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 7–11.

Mature height and width:
6–12 inches tall and 24–36 inches wide, spreading outward to form a broad groundcover.

Landscape uses:
Suitable for groundcover plantings, rock gardens, containers, retaining walls, and border edges. Its trailing habit makes it effective for softening hardscape edges and filling open spaces with long-lasting color.

Native range:
Derived from North American verbena species.

Sun exposure:
Full sun is ideal for dense growth and strong flowering. Plants may become sparse in heavily shaded locations.

Water requirements:
Moderate water needs once established. Prefers well-drained soil and performs best when allowed to dry slightly between watering. Excess moisture can reduce vigor.

Pests and problems:
Generally resilient but may occasionally develop powdery mildew or root issues in poorly drained soil. Good airflow and proper spacing help maintain healthy foliage.

Heat and sun tolerance:
Highly tolerant of heat and strong sunlight, maintaining flowering during warm weather when planted in well-drained soil.

Cold tolerance:
Handles moderate cold once established, though severe freezing may cause dieback. Plants often rebound from the base when temperatures warm.

Growing tips:
Plant in well-drained soil with good air circulation to encourage compact growth and reduce disease pressure. Light pruning after heavy bloom cycles helps maintain a tidy shape and encourages fresh flowering. Avoid excessive fertilization, as overly rich soil can lead to reduced bloom density. Position plants where they have room to spread naturally, allowing the trailing stems to create a full, layered effect across the planting area.
