Variegated Oregano (Origanum vulgare ‘Variegata’)

Plant Description:
Variegated Oregano is a perennial herb with aromatic, oval-shaped leaves edged in creamy yellow or white, giving it a decorative appearance in addition to its culinary value. In summer, it produces clusters of small pink to purple flowers that attract pollinators. The foliage has a mild, classic oregano scent and flavor, making it both ornamental and functional.

Grow Zone:
Perennial in USDA Zones 5–9. In colder zones, it can be grown as an annual or overwintered indoors in containers.

Height and Width:
Typically grows 8–12 inches tall and spreads 12–18 inches wide, forming a low, mounding mat.

Uses:
Commonly used as a culinary herb in Mediterranean dishes, sauces, and teas. Its variegated foliage adds visual interest to herb gardens, borders, and containers. The flowers attract bees and butterflies, making it suitable for pollinator-friendly plantings. It also works well as a groundcover in sunny spots due to its spreading habit.

Native Range:
Derived from Origanum vulgare, which is native to Europe, the Mediterranean region, and parts of western Asia.

Sun and Water Requirements:
Thrives in full sun, needing six or more hours of direct light daily for best growth and flavor. Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil and benefits from infrequent but deep watering, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Tolerant of drought once established but produces stronger foliage flavor when watered during extended dry periods.
