Tradescantia sillamontana
Plant Description:
Tradescantia sillamontana, commonly called White Velvet or Cobweb Spiderwort, is a low-growing perennial known for its gray-green leaves covered in dense white hairs, giving the foliage a soft, velvety, cobweb-like appearance. In summer, it produces small, bright magenta-pink flowers that contrast with the silvery foliage. Its spreading, mat-forming growth habit makes it both decorative and functional in the garden.
Grow Zone:
Perennial in USDA Zones 8–11. Grown as an annual or overwintered indoors in cooler zones.
Height and Width:
Typically grows 8–12 inches tall and spreads 12–24 inches wide, forming a dense groundcover.
Uses:
Ideal for rock gardens, xeriscapes, containers, and as a drought-tolerant groundcover. Its silvery foliage provides contrast in mixed plantings, and its flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. It is also used in borders or as a trailing plant in pots and hanging baskets.
Native Range:
Native to the arid regions of northeastern Mexico, where it grows on rocky slopes and dry hillsides.
Sun and Water Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade, with the most vibrant foliage color and flowering in bright light. Prefers well-drained, sandy or rocky soil and is highly drought-tolerant once established. Requires occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods but should not remain in soggy soil, as this can lead to root rot.
