Turk's Cap

Turk's Cap

Turk’s Cap (Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii)

Plant Description:
Turk’s Cap is a perennial shrub known for its bright red, tubular flowers that resemble small, closed hibiscus blooms. The flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies and bloom from late spring through fall. The plant has dark green, slightly fuzzy, lobed leaves and a bushy, spreading growth habit, remaining semi-evergreen in warmer regions.

Grow Zone:
Perennial in USDA Zones 7–11. In cooler zones, it may die back to the ground in winter but regrows in spring.

Height and Width:
Typically grows 3–6 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide, but can reach up to 8 feet tall in ideal conditions.

Uses:
Popular in pollinator gardens, native plant landscapes, and as a flowering hedge or border plant. Its showy, nectar-rich blooms make it ideal for attracting wildlife, while its dense growth offers seasonal screening. It also performs well in naturalized and cottage garden settings.

Native Range:
Native to the southern United States, Mexico, and Central America, commonly found in woodlands, thickets, and along edges of forests.

Sun and Water Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade, with the best flowering occurring in sunnier spots. Prefers well-drained soil but tolerates a range of soil types, including sandy or clay soils. Requires moderate watering, with some drought tolerance once established, though regular moisture encourages heavier blooming.
