Trailing Jade is a low-growing, succulent ground cover with cascading stems that can trail several feet. Its thick, fleshy, oval-shaped leaves are a rich green color with a slight purple hue under stress or cooler temperatures. In late fall or winter, it produces bright orange, daisy-like flowers that attract pollinators. This plant is prized for its trailing habit, making it ideal for hanging baskets or as a spiller in mixed containers.

USDA Grow Zones:

Zones 9-11 –  It thrives in warm climates but can be grown as a houseplant in cooler regions. Protect from frost, as it is sensitive to freezing temperatures.

Height and Width:

  • Height: 6-12 inches (15-30 cm)

  • Spread/Length: 2-4 feet (60-120 cm) trailing

Light Requirements:

  • Prefers bright, indirect light or partial sun outdoors.

  • Indoors, place it near a south- or west-facing window for best growth.

  • Can tolerate full sun but needs acclimation to avoid sunburn.

Watering:

  • Drought-tolerant but prefers regular watering during active growth (spring and summer).

  • Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot.

  • Reduce watering in fall and winter when growth slows.

Soil:

  • Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix.

  • Amend with perlite or pumice for improved drainage.

Temperature & Humidity:

  • Ideal temperature: 60-80°F (16-27°C).

  • Avoid exposure to temperatures below 40°F (4°C).

  • Prefers low humidity, making it perfect for arid climates or indoor environments.

🌼 Uses:

  • Hanging baskets and container gardens (indoor and outdoor).

  • Ground cover in warm climates.

  • Ideal for rock gardens and xeriscaping due to its drought tolerance.

  • Houseplant in cooler zones.

Native Range:

Native to the coastal mountains of Tanzania and Kenya in East Africa.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Prune back leggy stems to maintain shape and encourage branching.

  • Propagate easily by stem cuttings—let cuttings dry for a day before planting in soil.

  • Feed with a balanced, diluted cactus fertilizer during the growing season (spring-summer).
