Tradescantia ohiensis 'Smooth Spiderwort'

Tradescantia ohiensis 'Smooth Spiderwort'

Tradescantia ohiensis (Smooth Spiderwort)

Plant Description:
Tradescantia ohiensis, commonly known as Smooth Spiderwort, is a clump-forming perennial with slender, arching, grass-like leaves and round stems. From late spring through midsummer, it produces clusters of three-petaled, blue to violet flowers that open in the morning and close by afternoon. The plant spreads slowly by self-seeding and rhizomes, creating attractive, naturalized groupings.

Grow Zone:
Perennial in USDA Zones 4–9.

Height and Width:
Typically grows 2–3 feet tall and 1–2 feet wide, with flowering stems rising above the foliage.

Uses:
Ideal for native plant gardens, pollinator gardens, meadows, and naturalized areas. It attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators and can be used in borders or along woodland edges. Also suitable for erosion control due to its clumping and spreading growth habit.

Native Range:
Native to central and eastern North America, commonly found in prairies, open woodlands, roadsides, and meadows.

Sun and Water Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade, producing the most flowers in sunnier locations. Prefers moist, well-drained soil but tolerates clay, loam, and sandy soils. Regular watering helps maintain active growth, though it can tolerate brief dry periods once established. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage prolonged blooming.
