Sunpatiens "Compact Red" PP# 25015

Sunpatiens "Compact Red" PP# 25015

Plant name: SunPatiens® ‘Compact Red’ PP#25015
Scientific name: Impatiens hawkeri hybrid ‘Compact Red’ PP#25015

Plant description:
SunPatiens® ‘Compact Red’ is a vigorous, compact-growing impatiens bred for strong landscape performance and continuous flowering. This hybrid combines dense branching with a mounded habit, producing a uniform plant that fills containers and beds without becoming leggy. It is valued for reliable color, sturdy stems, and adaptability to a wide range of light conditions compared to traditional impatiens.

Flower description:
Large, flat red blooms cover the plant from late spring through frost, creating bold color in both sunny and partially shaded settings. Flowers are held above the foliage, maintaining a clean presentation even during extended bloom periods. The saturated red tone provides strong visual impact in mass plantings and mixed displays.

Leaf description:
Foliage is elongated and slightly serrated with a smooth texture and medium to deep green coloration. Leaves remain attractive throughout the growing season, supporting continuous flowering without significant fade or thinning when grown in appropriate conditions.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Tender perennial in warm climates; commonly grown as a seasonal annual in regions with freezing winters.

USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 10–11 as a perennial; used as an annual elsewhere.

Mature height and width:
14–24 inches tall and 14–24 inches wide, forming a dense, rounded mound.

Landscape uses:
Suitable for containers, hanging baskets, borders, mass plantings, and commercial landscapes. Its compact habit makes it effective for edging pathways, filling decorative planters, and providing consistent color in high-visibility areas.

Native range:
Hybrid derived from New Guinea impatiens species native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific regions.

Sun exposure:
Full sun to partial shade. Best performance occurs with bright light and some protection from intense afternoon exposure in hot climates.

Water requirements:
Requires regular moisture and well-drained soil. Consistent watering encourages continuous flowering and helps maintain strong foliage density. Avoid allowing soil to remain waterlogged.

Pests and problems:
Resistant to many issues that affect traditional impatiens, though occasional aphids, mites, or thrips may appear. Excessive shade can reduce flowering, while overly wet soil may lead to root stress.

Heat and sun tolerance:
Selected for improved tolerance to heat and sun compared to standard impatiens. Maintains bloom production through warm weather when provided with adequate moisture.

Cold tolerance:
Not frost tolerant. Growth slows in cool temperatures and plants may be damaged by prolonged cold exposure.

Growing tips:
Plant in fertile, well-drained soil with consistent organic matter to support steady growth. Space plants to allow airflow while still achieving a full appearance at maturity. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting and supplement lightly during peak growth to maintain flower production. Removing spent blooms is typically unnecessary, as this variety continues to produce new flowers without deadheading. Maintain even watering practices to prevent stress and support a dense, uniform habit.
