Sunpatiens "Compact Hot Pink"
Sunpatiens "Compact Hot Pink"
Plant name: SunPatiens “Compact Hot Pink”
Scientific name: Impatiens hawkeri hybrid ‘Compact Hot Pink’
Plant description:
SunPatiens “Compact Hot Pink” is a vigorous hybrid impatiens bred for strong branching, continuous flowering, and tolerance of sun and heat. This compact series forms a dense, mounded plant with sturdy stems that hold blooms above the foliage. It is widely used for high-impact seasonal color in garden beds, borders, and containers due to its uniform growth and extended bloom cycle.
Flower description:
Large, flat blooms in saturated hot pink cover the plant from late spring until frost. Flowers measure approximately 2–3 inches across and are produced continuously without the need for deadheading. The vivid color remains strong under bright light conditions.
Leaf description:
Leaves are lance-shaped, smooth, and deep green with a slightly glossy surface. The dense foliage provides a strong backdrop for the bold pink blooms and maintains a clean, full appearance throughout the growing season.
Deciduous or evergreen:
Grown as an annual in most climates; evergreen in frost-free regions
USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 10–11 as a perennial; grown as an annual in all zones
Mature height and width:
Typically 14–20 inches tall and 14–20 inches wide, forming a compact, rounded mound
Landscape uses:
Suitable for mass plantings, foundation beds, mixed borders, and large patio containers. Performs well in both sun and partial shade, making it adaptable for a range of landscape designs. Effective for creating bold blocks of seasonal color.
Native range:
Derived from New Guinea impatiens species native to Papua New Guinea; ‘Compact Hot Pink’ is a cultivated hybrid
Sun exposure:
Full sun to partial shade. Unlike traditional impatiens, it tolerates direct sunlight while also performing well in filtered light.
Water requirements:
Requires consistent moisture for best performance. Soil should remain evenly moist but well-drained. Avoid prolonged drought stress, which can reduce bloom production.
Pests and problems:
Generally resistant to downy mildew and other common impatiens issues. May occasionally attract aphids or spider mites under stress. Proper spacing improves airflow and reduces disease risk.
Heat and sun tolerance:
Excellent tolerance of heat and bright sun. Maintains flowering and foliage quality through warm summer conditions when moisture is adequate.
Cold tolerance:
Sensitive to frost. Growth slows in cool weather, and freezing temperatures will kill the plant.
Growing tips: Plant in fertile, well-drained soil and space to allow air circulation. Provide steady moisture during the growing season to maintain dense growth and continuous blooms. Light feeding with a balanced fertilizer supports strong flowering without excessive leaf growth. Remove damaged stems as needed to maintain a clean, uniform shape.
