Southern Cherry
Southern Cherry
Southern Cherry (Prunus caroliniana)
Plant Description:
Southern Cherry, commonly known as Carolina Laurel Cherry, is an evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy, dark green leaves and fragrant white flower clusters that bloom in spring. These flowers are followed by small black cherries that attract birds and wildlife. It has a dense, upright growth habit, making it popular for hedges and screens.
Grow Zone:
Best grown outdoors in USDA Zones 7–10. It tolerates heat and humidity well but is not suitable for areas with prolonged cold winters.
Height and Width:
Typically grows 15–30 feet tall and 10–20 feet wide, though it can be pruned and maintained as a smaller hedge or screen.
Uses:
Commonly used as a privacy hedge, windbreak, or specimen tree. Also serves as a food source for birds and pollinators, and is frequently used in landscaping for its evergreen foliage and low maintenance needs.
Native Range:
Native to the southeastern United States, including areas from North Carolina to Florida and west to Texas.
Sun and Water Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils but can tolerate a range of soil conditions, including sandy and clay soils. Requires moderate watering, particularly when young, but is drought-tolerant once established. It benefits from occasional pruning to maintain shape and encourage dense growth.
