Snapdragon
Snapdragon
Plant name: Snapdragon
Scientific name: Antirrhinum majus
Plant description:
Snapdragon is a cool-season flowering plant valued for its upright spikes and wide range of vivid colors. It forms a vertical clump of sturdy stems lined with buds that open progressively from the bottom upward. Depending on climate, snapdragons are grown as annuals or short-lived perennials. Their structured form makes them a reliable addition to borders, containers, and cutting gardens.
Flower description:
Flowers are tubular and two-lipped, forming distinctive “dragon mouth” blooms that open when gently pressed. Colors range from white and yellow to pink, red, orange, and deep burgundy, often in bicolor combinations. Blooming typically begins in spring and can continue into early summer, with additional flowering in cooler fall conditions in many regions.
Leaf description:
Leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, and medium green with a smooth surface. Foliage grows alternately along upright stems, forming a neat vertical profile that supports the flower spikes.
Deciduous or evergreen:
Typically grown as an annual; may act as a short-lived perennial in milder climates
USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 7–11 as a short-lived perennial; grown as an annual in all zones
Mature height and width:
Height varies by variety, ranging from 8 inches to 3 feet tall, with a spread of 8–18 inches
Landscape uses:
Suitable for mixed borders, seasonal color beds, cottage gardens, and container plantings. Taller varieties are widely used in cut flower arrangements. Compact types work well in edging and small-space gardens.
Native range:
Native to the Mediterranean region of Europe and North Africa
Sun exposure:
Full sun to light shade. In cooler climates, full sun promotes strong flowering. In warmer areas, light afternoon shade can help extend bloom time.
Water requirements:
Provide consistent moisture during establishment and active growth. Soil should remain evenly moist but well-drained. Avoid prolonged saturation, which can lead to root issues.
Pests and problems:
May occasionally experience aphids, spider mites, or rust. Good airflow and proper spacing reduce the risk of fungal diseases. Removing spent blooms helps maintain plant vigor.
Heat and sun tolerance:
Performs best in moderate temperatures. Extended heat can reduce flowering and cause plants to decline.
Cold tolerance:
Tolerates light frost and cool temperatures. Hard freezes can damage or kill plants, particularly in colder climates.
Growing tips:
Plant in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Deadhead regularly to encourage continued bloom production. Pinch young plants early to promote branching and fuller growth. Provide support for taller varieties in windy areas. Moderate feeding during the growing season supports steady flowering without excessive foliage growth.
