Shrimp Plant (Justicia) - Fruit Cocktail

Shrimp Plant (Justicia) - Fruit Cocktail

Shrimp Plant ‘Fruit Cocktail’ (Justicia brandegeeana)

Plant Description:
Shrimp Plant ‘Fruit Cocktail’ is a tropical, evergreen shrub known for its colorful, overlapping bracts in shades of pink, peach, and yellow that resemble the shape of shrimp. Small white tubular flowers emerge from the bracts, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. The plant has soft, green foliage and a bushy, arching habit, producing blooms nearly year-round in warm climates.

Grow Zone:
Best grown outdoors year-round in USDA Zones 9–11. In cooler zones, it can be grown in containers and overwintered indoors, as it is sensitive to frost.

Height and Width:
Typically grows 3–5 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide, with a rounded, slightly sprawling habit.

Uses:
Popular as an ornamental shrub in tropical and subtropical gardens, where it adds continuous color to borders, pollinator gardens, and mixed plantings. Also well-suited to containers on patios or courtyards, where its colorful bracts can be enjoyed up close.

Native Range:
Native to Mexico, where it grows in warm, tropical regions as an understory plant.

Sun and Water Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade, with best blooming occurring in areas receiving several hours of sunlight daily. Prefers well-drained soil enriched with organic matter and needs consistent moisture, especially during hot, dry periods, though it does not tolerate waterlogged conditions. Regular pruning can help maintain a compact shape and encourage more blooms.
