Senecio String of Pearls
Senecio String of Pearls
Senecio ‘String of Pearls’ (Curio rowleyanus)
Plant Description:
String of Pearls is a trailing succulent with slender, cascading stems lined with small, round, bead-like leaves resembling green pearls. These unique leaves store water and help the plant tolerate drought. It occasionally produces small, white, cinnamon-scented flowers, typically in summer when grown in bright conditions.
Grow Zone:
Best grown outdoors year-round in USDA Zones 9–12. In cooler zones, it is commonly grown indoors as a houseplant or brought inside during cold weather, as it is highly frost-sensitive.
Height and Width:
Typically grows 1–2 feet long as a trailing vine, with stems cascading from containers or hanging baskets. The plant forms a mat roughly 2–3 inches tall at the soil surface.
Uses:
Often used in hanging baskets, containers, and window boxes where its trailing stems can drape over edges. Also used in succulent arrangements, terrariums, and as a low-maintenance indoor plant for sunny windowsills.
Native Range:
Native to the arid regions of southwest Africa, where it grows as a groundcover or trailing plant in rocky, sandy environments.
Sun and Water Requirements:
Prefers bright, indirect light indoors or partial sun to light shade outdoors. Needs fast-draining, sandy soil and infrequent watering, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot, so containers with good drainage are essential. It tolerates low humidity and thrives in warm, dry environments.
