Sansevieria metallica 'Siam Silver'
Sansevieria metallica 'Siam Silver'
Plant name: Sansevieria metallica ‘Siam Silver’
Scientific name: Dracaena metallica ‘Siam Silver’ (syn. Sansevieria metallica ‘Siam Silver’)
Plant description:
Sansevieria metallica ‘Siam Silver’ is an upright succulent prized for its broad, silver-toned foliage and strong architectural form. Now classified within the Dracaena genus, this selection forms a compact clump of thick, rigid leaves that rise vertically from the base. Its metallic sheen and minimal care requirements make it a dependable choice for modern interiors and low-water plantings in warm climates.
Flower description:
Mature plants may produce tall flower spikes with small, tubular greenish-white blooms. Flowers are lightly fragrant, particularly in the evening. Indoor flowering is uncommon and typically occurs only on well-established plants.
Leaf description:
Leaves are wide, flat, and upright with a muted silver-gray surface overlaid with darker green banding. The foliage has a firm, leathery texture and a subtle metallic sheen that distinguishes it from other snake plant varieties. Leaves maintain their vertical structure without flopping.
Deciduous or evergreen:
Evergreen
USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 9–11 outdoors; widely grown indoors in all climates
Mature height and width:
Typically 2–3 feet tall and 1–2 feet wide, forming a dense upright clump
Landscape uses:
Suitable for indoor containers, office settings, and contemporary plant displays. In frost-free outdoor climates, it can be incorporated into xeriscape gardens, rock gardens, and low-maintenance landscape beds. Its bold vertical lines provide contrast against softer foliage plants.
Native range:
The species originates from tropical regions of Central Africa; ‘Siam Silver’ is a cultivated selection
Sun exposure:
Adaptable to bright, indirect light and moderate indoor light conditions. Brighter light enhances the silver coloration and banding. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh direct sun indoors to prevent leaf damage.
Water requirements:
Low water needs. Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Use a fast-draining succulent or cactus mix to prevent excess moisture retention. Reduce watering frequency during cooler months.
Pests and problems:
Generally pest resistant but may occasionally experience mealybugs or scale. Root rot is the most common issue and results from overwatering or poorly drained soil. Soft or yellowing leaves typically indicate excess moisture.
Heat and sun tolerance:
Performs well in warm indoor environments and tolerates heat when grown in well-drained soil. Gradual acclimation is recommended before increasing light exposure.
Cold tolerance:
Sensitive to cold temperatures. Prolonged exposure below 50°F can cause damage, and freezing conditions will kill the plant. Protect from drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Growing tips:
Plant in a container with drainage holes and avoid oversized pots that hold excess moisture. Water thoroughly but infrequently, ensuring the soil dries between applications. Rotate periodically for even growth. Fertilize lightly during the active growing season to maintain steady development without promoting weak growth. Clean leaves occasionally to remove dust and maintain their metallic sheen.
