Sansevieria aubrytiana
Sansevieria aubrytiana
Plant name: Sansevieria aubrytiana
Scientific name: Dracaena aubrytiana (syn. Sansevieria aubrytiana)
Plant description:
Sansevieria aubrytiana is an upright, architectural succulent grown for its bold, vertical foliage and low-maintenance care requirements. Now classified within the Dracaena genus, this species forms a clumping rosette of thick, sword-like leaves that rise directly from the soil. Its structured habit and tolerance of indoor conditions make it a reliable choice for modern interiors and drought-tolerant landscapes in warm climates.
Flower description:
Mature plants may produce tall flower spikes bearing small, tubular, greenish-white blooms. The flowers are lightly fragrant, especially in the evening. Blooming is infrequent in indoor settings and typically occurs on well-established plants.
Leaf description:
Leaves are broad, upright, and firm with a mottled pattern of medium to dark green banding. The surface has a smooth, slightly waxy texture that reduces moisture loss. Foliage maintains a strong vertical form and can develop subtle striping depending on light exposure.
Deciduous or evergreen:
Evergreen
USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 9–11 outdoors; widely grown indoors in all climates
Mature height and width:
Typically 2–3 feet tall and 1–2 feet wide, forming a dense upright clump
Landscape uses:
Suitable for indoor containers, office spaces, and minimalist plant displays. In frost-free outdoor climates, it can be used in xeriscape plantings, rock gardens, and low-water landscapes. Its upright form makes it effective as a structural accent plant.
Native range:
Native to tropical regions of Central Africa
Sun exposure:
Tolerates a wide range of light conditions from bright, indirect light to lower indoor light levels. Stronger light encourages more pronounced leaf patterning. Avoid prolonged intense direct sun indoors to prevent leaf scorch.
Water requirements:
Low water needs. Allow soil to dry thoroughly between waterings. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline. Use a fast-draining soil mix designed for succulents or cacti. Reduce watering frequency during cooler months.
Pests and problems:
Generally resistant to pests but may occasionally develop mealybugs or scale. Root rot can occur in poorly drained soil or when watered too frequently. Soft, yellowing leaves often indicate excess moisture.
Heat and sun tolerance:
Performs well in warm indoor temperatures and tolerates heat when soil drainage is adequate. Can adapt to brighter light gradually but should not be moved abruptly into intense direct sun.
Cold tolerance:
Sensitive to cold. Temperatures below 50°F can cause damage, and freezing conditions will kill the plant. Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
Growing tips:
Plant in a container with drainage holes and a gritty, well-drained soil mix. Avoid oversized pots, which can retain excess moisture. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Rotate indoor plants periodically to encourage even growth. Fertilize lightly during the active growing season to maintain steady development without forcing excessive soft growth.
