Salvia greggii (Autumn Sage) Growing Guide

Plant Description

Salvia greggii, commonly known as Autumn Sage, is a woody, semi-evergreen perennial or small shrub prized for its long-lasting blooms in shades of red, pink, coral, purple, white, or bi-colored varieties. The aromatic, small green leaves have a slight minty fragrance when crushed. This heat- and drought-tolerant salvia blooms from spring through fall, providing nectar for hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees.

  • Avoid heavy clay or overly rich, moist soils

Watering

  • Drought-tolerant once established

  • Water moderately until established, then reduce frequency

  • Water deeply but infrequently to encourage strong root growth

Fertilization

  • Minimal fertilization needed

  • A light application of balanced fertilizer in early spring can boost growth

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming

  • Prune lightly in early spring to maintain shape and remove dead growth

  • Cut back by one-third after the main flowering season to keep it compact
