Salvia farinacea 'Farina Bicolor Blue' is a cultivar of mealycup sage known for its striking bicolor blue and white flower spikes. This tender perennial is often grown as an annual in cooler climates and is prized for its long blooming period and ability to attract pollinators.

Plant Description:

  • Foliage: Narrow, lance-shaped green leaves.
  • Flowers: Erect spikes of tubular flowers with a bicolor pattern of blue and white.

Growing Zones:

  • USDA Zones 8–10. In cooler zones, it is typically grown as an annual.

Height and Width:

  • Height: Typically reaches 18–24 inches.
  • Spread: Approximately 12–18 inches.

Uses:

  • Ideal for mixed beds and borders, adding vertical interest.
  • Suitable for cottage gardens and formal garden styles.
  • Performs well in containers and is excellent for cutting gardens.
  • Attracts pollinators, making it a valuable addition to wildlife or butterfly gardens.

Native Range:

  • Salvia farinacea is native to Texas and parts of Mexico.

Growing Conditions:

  • Light: Prefers full sun but can tolerate some shade.
  • Soil: Thrives in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soils.
  • Water: Requires regular watering until established; once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant.
  • Temperature: Sensitive to frost; in colder zones, it should be treated as an annual or overwintered indoors.
  • Fertilizer: Benefits from a balanced, slow-release fertilizer applied in spring.

Care Tips:

  • Planting: Set out seedlings or purchased plants after the last frost date. Seeds should be started indoors 10–12 weeks before the last frost.
  • Pruning: Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering.
  • Overwintering: In colder climates, consider taking cuttings in late summer to overwinter indoors or potting up plants in fall for indoor growth.
