Ruella Ragin Cajun
Ruella Ragin Cajun
Plant name: Ruellia ‘Ragin Cajun’
Scientific name: Ruellia simplex ‘Ragin Cajun’
Plant description:
Ruellia ‘Ragin Cajun’ is a compact Mexican petunia selection bred for controlled growth and extended flowering. Unlike older varieties that spread aggressively, this cultivar maintains a more contained, clumping habit while delivering consistent color. It forms upright stems with a tidy, rounded profile, making it suitable for borders, containers, and mass plantings.
Flower description:
Trumpet-shaped flowers in vivid purple to violet tones bloom from late spring through fall. Individual blooms are short-lived, but new flowers open daily, creating a steady display over many months. The blossoms attract pollinators and stand out clearly against the green foliage.
Leaf description:
Leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, and medium to dark green with a smooth surface. Foliage grows densely along upright stems, creating a full plant that supports continuous flowering.
Deciduous or evergreen:
Evergreen in frost-free climates; may die back to the ground in colder regions and regrow from the roots in spring
USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 8–11
Mature height and width:
Typically 18–24 inches tall and 18–24 inches wide, forming a compact clump
Landscape uses:
Suitable for mixed perennial borders, mass plantings, pollinator gardens, and large containers. Its manageable size makes it effective for edging and smaller landscape spaces. Performs well in areas where consistent seasonal color is needed.
Native range:
Species native to Mexico; ‘Ragin Cajun’ is a cultivated selection
Sun exposure:
Full sun promotes the heaviest bloom production and strongest growth. Tolerates light shade but may produce fewer flowers in reduced light.
Water requirements:
Moderate water during establishment. Once established, it tolerates periodic dry conditions but performs best with consistent moisture in well-drained soil. Avoid prolonged waterlogged conditions.
Pests and problems:
Generally low maintenance. May occasionally experience aphids or spider mites. Root issues can develop in poorly drained soils. Good spacing improves airflow and overall plant health.
Heat and sun tolerance:
Excellent tolerance of heat and direct sun. Maintains steady flowering through high summer temperatures when provided adequate moisture.
Cold tolerance:
Top growth is damaged by frost. In climates within its hardiness range, plants may regrow from the base after light freezes. Extended freezing temperatures can cause significant dieback.
Growing tips:
Plant in well-drained soil with adequate spacing to maintain airflow. Trim lightly during the growing season to encourage branching and maintain a compact shape. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization, which can promote leafy growth at the expense of flowers. In regions with winter cold, cut back frost-damaged stems in early spring once new growth begins to emerge.
