Rudbeckia 'Denver Daisy'

Rudbeckia 'Denver Daisy'

Plant name: Rudbeckia ‘Denver Daisy’

Scientific name: Rudbeckia hirta ‘Denver Daisy’

Plant description:
Rudbeckia ‘Denver Daisy’ is a compact selection of black-eyed Susan known for its bold bicolor blooms and strong garden performance. This short-lived perennial or often grown annual forms a sturdy, upright clump with well-branched stems that hold flowers above the foliage. It is valued for its long bloom period and reliable color in summer landscapes.

Flower description:
Large daisy-like flowers feature golden-yellow petals brushed with deep red near the center, surrounding a dark brown cone. Blooms typically measure 3–4 inches across and appear from early summer through fall. Regular deadheading encourages continuous flowering.

Leaf description:
Leaves are lance-shaped to oval, medium green, and slightly rough to the touch. Foliage forms a dense base that supports upright flowering stems.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Short-lived perennial in milder climates; commonly grown as an annual

USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 4–9

Mature height and width:
Typically 18–24 inches tall and 12–18 inches wide, forming a compact, upright clump

Landscape uses:
Suitable for mixed borders, pollinator gardens, cutting gardens, and mass plantings. Its bold flower color pairs well with ornamental grasses and other summer-blooming perennials. Works effectively in patio containers and seasonal displays.

Native range:
Species native to North America; ‘Denver Daisy’ is a cultivated selection

Sun exposure:
Full sun is required for sturdy stems and maximum bloom production. Insufficient light may result in weaker growth and reduced flowering.

Water requirements:
Moderate water during establishment. Once established, it tolerates short dry periods but performs best with consistent moisture in well-drained soil. Avoid prolonged saturation.

Pests and problems:
Generally low maintenance. May occasionally experience aphids or leaf spot in humid conditions. Good spacing and airflow reduce disease risk.

Heat and sun tolerance:
Performs well in warm summer conditions and tolerates direct sunlight. Consistent watering during extended heat supports continued bloom production.

Cold tolerance:
Hardy to USDA Zone 4. In colder climates, plants may behave as annuals or short-lived perennials. Frost will end the blooming cycle for the season.

Growing tips:
Plant in well-drained soil and provide adequate spacing to encourage airflow. Deadhead spent blooms regularly to promote repeat flowering and maintain a tidy appearance. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization, which can reduce flower production. Cutting back lightly after an early flush of blooms can encourage additional branching and a renewed display later in the season.
