Quince Cameo

Quince Cameo

Plant name: Quince ‘Cameo’

Scientific name: Chaenomeles speciosa ‘Cameo’

Plant description:
Quince ‘Cameo’ is a deciduous flowering shrub valued for its early spring bloom and dense, rounded growth habit. This ornamental quince produces a compact, multi-stemmed form with arching branches that create a full structure even when not in flower. It is widely used in foundation plantings, mixed borders, and informal hedges due to its reliability and strong seasonal interest.

Flower description:
Double blooms open in soft apricot-peach tones with layered petals that give a camellia-like appearance. Flowers emerge in early spring before or just as foliage begins to appear, covering the bare branches with color. Blooming typically lasts several weeks and provides an early nectar source for pollinators.

Leaf description:
Leaves are oval, glossy, and medium green, emerging shortly after flowering. Foliage forms a dense canopy through the growing season and may develop light yellow tones before dropping in fall.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Deciduous

USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 5–9

Mature height and width:
Typically 4–5 feet tall and 4–5 feet wide, forming a rounded, compact shrub

Landscape uses:
Suitable for foundation plantings, mixed shrub borders, flowering hedges, and early-season focal points. Works well in cottage-style gardens and can be trained against walls or fences for added structure.

Native range:
Species native to eastern Asia; ‘Cameo’ is a cultivated selection

Sun exposure:
Full sun to light shade. Best flowering occurs with at least six hours of direct sunlight daily.

Water requirements:
Moderate water during establishment. Once established, it tolerates short dry periods but performs best with consistent moisture in well-drained soil. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Pests and problems:
Generally low maintenance. May occasionally experience aphids or scale insects. Fire blight can occur in certain climates; good airflow and proper spacing help reduce risk.

Heat and sun tolerance:
Performs well in full sun and tolerates warm summer conditions with adequate moisture.

Cold tolerance:
Hardy to USDA Zone 5. Flowers may be damaged by late spring frosts, but the plant itself is resilient to winter cold within its hardiness range.

Growing tips:
Plant in well-drained soil and allow adequate space for natural branching. Prune immediately after flowering to shape the shrub and encourage strong bloom production the following year, as flower buds form on older wood. Avoid heavy nitrogen fertilization, which can promote excessive foliage at the expense of flowers. Apply mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature while keeping mulch clear of the stems.
