Pothos 'Marble Queen'
Pothos 'Marble Queen'
Plant name: Pothos ‘Marble Queen’
Scientific name: Epipremnum aureum ‘Marble Queen’
Plant description:
Pothos ‘Marble Queen’ is a variegated evergreen vine known for its creamy white and green marbled foliage. This cultivar offers a lighter, more heavily patterned appearance than standard green pothos, making it a strong choice for brightening interior spaces. It produces trailing or climbing stems that can be trained along shelves, allowed to cascade from hanging containers, or guided upward on a support. Its adaptability and steady growth rate make it a dependable indoor plant for homes and commercial settings.
Flower description:
Flowering is uncommon in indoor environments. In its native tropical habitat, mature plants may produce small spathe-and-spadix blooms typical of the aroid family, but ornamental value is centered on its foliage rather than flowers.
Leaf description:
Leaves are heart-shaped, moderately thick, and glossy, featuring heavy white to cream marbling across a green base. Variegation patterns vary leaf to leaf, often producing a high-contrast, speckled effect. In brighter light, the variegation becomes more pronounced; in lower light, foliage may revert to greener tones.
Deciduous or evergreen:
Evergreen
USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 10–12 outdoors; commonly grown as a houseplant in all climates
Mature height and width:
Trailing stems can extend 6–10 feet or longer indoors. Spread depends on pruning and container size. When grown vertically on a pole or trellis, leaves may enlarge and stems may thicken over time.
Landscape uses:
Used as a trailing houseplant in hanging baskets, shelf displays, and tabletop containers. Suitable for climbing supports such as moss poles. In frost-free outdoor climates, it can function as a groundcover or climbing vine. Its light-toned foliage makes it effective for brightening shaded interiors.
Native range:
Native to the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific
Sun exposure:
Bright, indirect light supports strong variegation and compact growth. Tolerates moderate indoor light levels but may produce slower growth and reduced marbling in dim spaces. Direct sun can scorch the pale portions of the leaves.
Water requirements:
Allow the top portion of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly and ensure excess moisture drains freely. Avoid consistently saturated soil, which can lead to root rot. Reduce watering frequency during cooler months or in low light conditions.
Pests and problems:
Generally low maintenance. May occasionally attract spider mites, mealybugs, or scale. Yellowing leaves typically indicate overwatering. Sparse growth and smaller leaves often result from insufficient light.
Heat and sun tolerance:
Performs well in normal indoor temperature ranges and tolerates warm conditions. Sensitive to intense direct sunlight, especially on variegated leaf surfaces.
Cold tolerance:
Not frost tolerant. Growth slows below 55°F, and extended exposure to cold can damage foliage and roots.
Growing tips:
Use a well-draining indoor potting mix and a container with drainage holes. Provide consistent bright, indirect light to maintain the creamy variegation. Prune stems to encourage branching and fuller growth. Rotate the plant periodically for even light exposure. Fertilize lightly during the active growing season to support steady, balanced development without forcing weak growth.
