Portulaca 'SeaGlass Double Guava', commonly known as moss rose or purslane, is a vibrant, heat-tolerant annual celebrated for its double fuchsia blooms with yellow centers. Its low-growing, trailing habit makes it an excellent choice for adding a splash of color to various garden settings.

Plant Description:

  • Height: Typically reaches 4 to 6 inches
  • Spread: 16 to 20 inches wide, forming a dense, colorful mat.
  • Flowers: Features double flowers with magenta centers surrounded by five yellow petals, providing a unique and eye-catching display.
  • Foliage: Succulent, needle-like green leaves that contribute to its drought tolerance.

Native Range:

Portulaca species are indigenous to tropical regions worldwide, thriving in warm, arid climates.

USDA Hardiness Zones:

Best suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 10a to 11b, where it can be grown outdoors year-round. In cooler climates, it is typically cultivated as an annual.

Cultivation and Care:

  • Light: Thrives in full sun, requiring 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and flowering.

  • Soil: Prefers well-draining, sandy or loamy soils with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.

  • Watering: After establishment, allow the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot.

  • Fertilization: Light feeding with a balanced fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season supports vibrant blooms.

  • Pruning: Deadheading spent flowers and occasional trimming encourage continuous blooming and maintain a tidy appearance.

Uses:

  • Groundcover: Its spreading habit makes it ideal for covering bare spots, slopes, or sandy areas, providing erosion control and visual appeal.

  • Containers and Hanging Baskets: The trailing stems cascade beautifully over the edges, adding vibrant color to patios and balconies.

  • Rock Gardens: Complements other drought-tolerant plants in xeriscaping designs.

Additional Considerations:

  • Drought Tolerance: Once established, it requires minimal watering, making it suitable for xeriscaping.

  • Pollinator Attraction: Bright blooms attract bees and butterflies, enhancing garden biodiversity.

  • Low Maintenance: Its resilience and minimal care requirements make it ideal for both novice and experienced gardeners.
