Peperomia polybotrya 'Raindrop'

Peperomia polybotrya 'Raindrop'

Plant name: Peperomia ‘Raindrop’

Scientific name: Peperomia polybotrya

Plant description:
Peperomia ‘Raindrop’ is a compact tropical foliage plant known for its thick, glossy leaves shaped like water droplets. This upright-growing species forms a tidy clump of succulent stems topped with smooth, deep green foliage. Its manageable size and durable structure make it well suited for desks, shelves, and small indoor spaces.

Flower description:
Mature plants may produce slender, upright flower spikes that resemble narrow green rat tails. These inflorescences are subtle and not considered ornamental, with the plant primarily grown for its foliage.

Leaf description:
Leaves are broad, rounded to teardrop-shaped, and slightly pointed at the tip. The surface is smooth, glossy, and medium to deep green with a thick, succulent texture. Individual leaves typically reach 3–5 inches long and are held upright on sturdy petioles.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Evergreen tropical perennial.

USDA grow zones:
Zones 10–12 outdoors; grown as a houseplant in all zones.

Mature height and width:
12–18 inches tall and 12–18 inches wide.

Landscape uses:
Primarily used as an indoor container plant. Suitable for tabletops, office spaces, shelves, and modern interior plant collections. In frost-free climates, it can be grown outdoors in shaded patios or protected garden beds.

Native range:
Native to northern South America, including Colombia and Peru.

Sun exposure:
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Tolerates medium light conditions but should be protected from direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. Insufficient light may slow growth.

Water requirements:
Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Use a well-draining potting mix designed for tropical plants or succulents. Avoid overwatering, as the semi-succulent stems and leaves store moisture and are sensitive to excess soil saturation.

Pests and problems:
Generally low maintenance. Occasional issues include mealybugs, spider mites, and fungus gnats in overly moist soil. Yellowing leaves are often a sign of overwatering.

Heat and sun tolerance:
Performs best in temperatures between 65–80°F. Tolerates typical indoor warmth. Direct, intense sunlight can damage foliage, especially during midday exposure.

Cold tolerance:
Sensitive to cold. Temperatures below 50°F can cause leaf drop or plant stress. Protect from drafts and freezing conditions.

Growing tips:
Plant in a container with drainage holes to prevent standing water. Provide consistent, moderate light to maintain compact growth. Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer. Rotate the plant occasionally to ensure even development. Avoid heavy watering schedules and allow soil to partially dry between waterings to support healthy roots.
