Passiflora incarnata "Purple Passionflower"

Passiflora incarnata "Purple Passionflower"

Plant name: Purple Passionflower

Scientific name: Passiflora incarnata

Plant description:
Purple Passionflower is a vigorous, native perennial vine valued for its intricate blooms and edible fruit. This fast-growing climber produces twining stems that quickly cover trellises, fences, and arbors. It spreads by both vine growth and underground runners, forming colonies in suitable conditions. The plant is widely grown for ornamental appeal, pollinator support, and traditional herbal use.

Flower description:
Large, complex flowers measure 2–3 inches across and feature layered filaments in shades of lavender, purple, and white. The distinctive floral structure includes a central crown and prominent reproductive parts. Blooms appear from late spring through summer and attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Flowers are followed by oval green fruit that ripens to yellow and is edible when mature.

Leaf description:
Leaves are three-lobed, medium to dark green, and slightly glossy. Each leaf measures 3–6 inches wide with smooth to lightly toothed edges. Foliage provides a dense screen during the growing season.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Herbaceous perennial; deciduous in winter in most climates. Top growth dies back with frost and regrows in spring.

USDA grow zones:
Zones 5–9.

Mature height and width:
10–20 feet long as a climbing vine; spreads by underground runners if not contained.

Landscape uses:
Suitable for trellises, arbors, fences, pollinator gardens, edible landscapes, and naturalized areas. Often used to create seasonal privacy screens and to support native wildlife. Fruit can be harvested for fresh eating or culinary use.

Native range:
Native to the southeastern and central United States.

Sun exposure:
Full sun to partial sun. Best flowering occurs with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Light shade is tolerated but may reduce bloom production.

Water requirements:
Prefers well-drained soil with moderate moisture. Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it tolerates short dry periods but performs best with consistent watering. Avoid waterlogged conditions.

Pests and problems:
May attract caterpillars, including Gulf fritillary larvae, which feed on foliage. Aphids and spider mites can occur. Root rot may develop in poorly drained soil. Spreading habit may require management in small gardens.

Heat and sun tolerance:
Handles high summer temperatures and strong sun when adequately watered. Growth remains vigorous in warm conditions.

Cold tolerance:
Hardy to approximately -10°F when well established. Top growth dies back in freezing temperatures, but roots typically survive and resprout in spring within its hardiness range.

Growing tips:
Provide a sturdy support structure at planting time to guide climbing stems. Prune in late winter or early spring to control size and encourage fresh growth. Install root barriers or grow in contained areas to manage spreading runners. Fertilize lightly in spring to support strong vine development and flowering. Regular harvesting of fruit encourages continued production during the growing season.
