Size

'Chilly Chili' (Capsicum annuum) is an ornamental pepper variety known for its striking, colorful fruit. The peppers start out as a bright green, transitioning through shades of yellow, orange, and finally maturing to a vibrant red. The fruits are small, measuring about 1 to 2 inches in length, and are held upright on the plant, creating a vivid display. Unlike many ornamental peppers, the 'Chilly Chili' is notably mild in heat, making it safe around children and pets.

 Grow Zone

'Chilly Chili' peppers thrive in USDA hardiness zones 9-11. In cooler climates, they can be grown as annuals or in containers that can be brought indoors when temperatures drop.

Height and Width

- Height: The plant typically grows to a height of 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 cm).

- Width: It spreads to about 12 to 16 inches (30 to 40 cm) wide.

Uses

'Chilly Chili' peppers are primarily grown for ornamental purposes, but they also have other uses:

- Ornamental: Their vibrant color makes them a popular choice for garden borders, containers, and indoor pots.

- Edible: While the peppers are edible, they are extremely mild, with very little heat.

- Decorative Arrangements: The colorful fruits are often used in fall and holiday decorations.

- Landscaping: Their compact size and bright colors make them an attractive addition to mixed plantings or as a focal point in a small garden.

Native Range

'Chilly Chili' is a cultivar of Capsicum annuum, a species native to Central and South America. The species has been cultivated for thousands of years and has spread worldwide, resulting in a wide variety of peppers, both ornamental and culinary.

How to Grow 'Chilly Chili' Pepper

1. Planting Time:

   - In warmer zones, plant transplants after the danger of frost has passed.

2. Soil Preparation:

   - 'Chilly Chili' peppers prefer well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-7.5.

   - Enrich the soil with compost or organic matter before planting.

3. Planting:

   - Space plants about 12 inches apart to allow room for growth.

   - If planting in containers, use a pot that is at least 10 inches in diameter.

4. Watering:

   - Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.

   - Be careful not to overwater, especially in containers.

5. Fertilization:

   - Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting time.

   - Supplement with a liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.

6. Sunlight:

   - 'Chilly Chili' peppers require full sun, at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

7. Harvesting:

   - The peppers can be harvested at any color stage, though they reach their peak ornamental value when they turn bright red.

   - Harvest by cutting the peppers from the plant with scissors or pruners to avoid damaging the branches.
