Urtica dioica, also known as stinging nettle, isa perennial plant that is native to Europe and can now be found in temperate North America. Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) has been used in herbal medicine since the Bronze Age (3000 BCE–1200 BCE). Ancient Egyptians: Used stinging nettle to treat arthritis and lower back pain
Roman troops: Rubbed stinging nettle on themselves to stay warm
Medieval Europe: Used as a diuretic to get rid of excess water and to treat joint pain
Julius Caesar's troops: Used stinging nettle's stinging properties to help them stay alert and awake at night between 58 and 45 BCE
Traditional use: Used to control cardiovascular disorders, especially hypertension
