Sansevieria Spp. Snake Plant
Sansevieria Spp. Snake Plant
Plant name: Sansevieria spp., Snake Plant
Scientific name: Dracaena spp. (formerly Sansevieria spp.)
Plant description:
Snake Plant, commonly referred to as Sansevieria, is a group of upright, evergreen succulents known for their durability and strong vertical form. Now classified within the Dracaena genus, these plants form clumping rosettes of thick, sword-shaped leaves that emerge directly from the soil. They are widely grown as indoor plants due to their adaptability, drought tolerance, and minimal maintenance requirements.
Flower description:
Mature plants may produce tall, slender flower spikes bearing small, tubular greenish-white blooms. The flowers are lightly fragrant, particularly in the evening. Flowering is infrequent indoors and typically occurs on established plants under favorable conditions.
Leaf description:
Leaves are rigid, upright, and fleshy, ranging from narrow and blade-like to broad and flat depending on the species or cultivar. Foliage patterns include solid green, gray-green banding, yellow margins, or silver striping. The thick leaf structure allows the plant to store water and tolerate dry conditions.
Deciduous or evergreen:
Evergreen
USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 9–11 outdoors; widely grown indoors in all climates
Mature height and width:
Height ranges from 6 inches to 4 feet depending on species and cultivar. Spread typically ranges from 8 inches to 3 feet as plants gradually form dense clumps.
Landscape uses:
Suitable for indoor containers, office environments, and modern interior plantings. In frost-free climates, it can be used in xeriscape gardens, rock gardens, and low-water landscape designs. Its upright growth habit provides strong architectural contrast in mixed plantings.
Native range:
Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and parts of southern Asia
Sun exposure:
Adaptable to a wide range of light conditions from bright, indirect light to moderate indoor light. Some varieties tolerate lower light, though growth slows. Brighter light enhances leaf color and patterning. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sun indoors.
Water requirements:
Low water needs. Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline. Use a fast-draining soil mix formulated for succulents or cacti. Reduce watering frequency during cooler months.
Pests and problems:
Generally pest resistant but may occasionally experience mealybugs or scale. Root rot can occur in poorly drained soil or when watered too frequently. Soft, collapsing leaves typically indicate excess moisture.
Heat and sun tolerance:
Performs well in warm indoor environments and tolerates heat when soil drainage is adequate. Gradual acclimation is recommended before increasing light intensity.
Cold tolerance:
Sensitive to cold temperatures. Exposure below 50°F can cause damage, and freezing conditions will kill the plant. Protect from drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Growing tips:
Plant in containers with drainage holes and avoid oversized pots that retain excess moisture. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between applications. Rotate indoor plants periodically to encourage even growth. Fertilize lightly during the active growing season to support steady development without forcing soft growth. Clean foliage occasionally to maintain healthy leaf surfaces and enhance visual appeal.
