Moranga Tree (Moringa oleifera)

Moranga Tree (Moringa oleifera)

Moringa is a fast-growing, deciduous tree valued for its nutritious leaves, pods, flowers, and seeds. The leaves are small, oval, and bright green, while the tree produces long, slender seed pods known as drumsticks. It is widely grown for food, traditional medicine, and oil extraction from its seeds.

Grow Zone: USDA Zones 9–11. It can be grown as an annual in cooler regions.

Height and Width: Can grow 10–20 feet tall in its first year and may reach up to 30–40 feet tall and 20 feet wide at maturity if not pruned.

Uses: Cultivated for edible leaves, pods, and seeds, which are rich in vitamins and minerals. Young pods are used in cooking, leaves are eaten fresh or dried as a superfood, and seeds yield a valuable oil. It is also used as a shade tree, livestock fodder, and in traditional medicine.

Native Range: Native to the Himalayan foothills of northern India but now naturalized and cultivated across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

Sun Requirements: Requires full sun for best growth and production.

Water Requirements: Very drought-tolerant once established. Requires moderate watering during establishment but should not be overwatered. Prefers well-draining soil and performs well in dry conditions.
