Marigolds - Bonanza Yellow

Marigolds - Bonanza Yellow

Plant name: Marigolds – Bonanza Yellow

Scientific name: Tagetes patula ‘Bonanza Yellow’

Plant description:
Bonanza Yellow is a compact French marigold known for its uniform growth habit, early flowering, and strong garden performance. This selection produces sturdy, well-branched plants that maintain a tidy mound throughout the growing season. It is widely used for bedding displays, edging, and container plantings due to its consistent bloom coverage and manageable size.

Flower description:
Blooms are fully double and rich golden yellow, typically 2–3 inches across. Flowers are densely petaled with a rounded form and are produced continuously through the growing season. Regular removal of spent blooms encourages steady flowering.

Leaf description:
Foliage is finely divided, fern-like, and medium green. Leaves have the characteristic marigold scent and provide a textured backdrop that highlights the bold yellow flowers. The compact foliage structure supports dense flowering without excessive stretching.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Annual

USDA grow zones:
Grown as an annual in all USDA zones

Mature height and width:
Typically 10–12 inches tall and 8–10 inches wide, forming a compact, rounded mound

Landscape uses:
Suitable for flower beds, edging, borders, mass plantings, and container gardens. Frequently used in vegetable gardens as a companion plant. Its compact size makes it effective for filling gaps in mixed plantings and creating consistent color blocks.

Native range:
Species native to Mexico and Central America; ‘Bonanza Yellow’ is a cultivated variety

Sun exposure:
Full sun is required for dense growth and heavy bloom production. Reduced sunlight can lead to fewer flowers and elongated stems.

Water requirements:
Provide moderate water during establishment. Once established, allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as consistently wet soil can lead to root issues.

Pests and problems:
Generally low maintenance. May occasionally experience aphids, spider mites, or fungal issues in overly humid or poorly drained conditions. Good airflow reduces disease risk.

Heat and sun tolerance:
Performs well in warm weather and tolerates direct sun. Consistent moisture supports continued flowering during extended heat.

Cold tolerance:
Sensitive to frost. Growth slows in cool temperatures, and plants will decline with freezing conditions.

Growing tips:
Plant in well-drained soil and space properly to encourage airflow and prevent disease. Deadhead regularly to maintain a steady bloom cycle and keep plants looking clean. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization, which promotes foliage growth at the expense of flowers. Light feeding during the growing season supports balanced growth and extended bloom performance.
