Lysimachia congestiflora 'Variegated', commonly known as Variegated Moneywort, Golden Globes Loosestrife Variegated Creeping Jenny, is a low-growing, herbaceous perennial prized for its attractive variegated foliage and bright yellow flowers. This plant is native to China and is well-suited for use as ground cover, in rock gardens, or cascading over walls and containers.

Plant Description:

  • Foliage: Forms a dense mat of small, rounded leaves with lime green and yellow variegation. The trailing stems root at the nodes, aiding in its spreading habit.
  • Flowers: Produces masses of golden-yellow, cup-shaped flowers from late spring through summer, adding vibrant color to the landscape.

Growing Zones:

  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 7 to 9.

Mature Size:

  • Height: Approximately 3 to 6 inches.
  • Spread: Up to 12 inches.

Growing Conditions:

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to part shade. In hotter climates, partial shade is beneficial to prevent leaf scorch.
  • Soil: Prefers well-draining, humusy soils that retain moisture. While it tolerates a range of soil types, consistent moisture is key to maintaining its lush appearance.
  • Watering: Requires regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulching can help retain soil moisture.
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring to promote healthy growth and flowering.

Uses in Landscaping:

  • Ground Cover: Its spreading habit makes it ideal for covering bare spots in the garden, especially in shaded areas where grass may not thrive.
  • Rock Gardens: The trailing stems cascade gracefully over rocks, adding visual interest.
  • Containers and Hanging Baskets: Provides a lush, trailing effect, complementing other plants with its variegated foliage and bright flowers.
  • Erosion Control: Effective in stabilizing soil on gentle slopes due to its mat-forming growth.

Native Range: Lysimachia congestiflora is native to China, commonly found along moist forest edges, bushes, and rice field margins at elevations ranging from 200 to 2,100 meters.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Pruning: Trim back after flowering to maintain desired shape and control spread.
  • Pest and Disease Control: Generally pest-free, but monitor for slugs and snails, especially in damp conditions.
  • Winter Care: In colder zones, consider mulching in late fall to protect the roots from freezing temperatures.
