Lobularia Snow Princess

Lobularia Snow Princess

Botanical Name: Lobularia maritima
Common Names: Sweet Alyssum, Alyssum
USDA Zone: Annual in Zones 9–11 (can reseed)
Type: Annual to tender perennial (heat-tolerant hybrid varieties may last longer)
Bloom Time: Fall through spring; may slow or stop in extreme summer heat
Height & Spread: 4–8" tall x 12–18" wide
Flower Colors: White, pink, lavender, purple, or mix (depending on cultivar)

 Sunlight

  • Full Sun to Partial Shade.

  • In Zone 9, morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal — especially during the hottest months.

  • If grown in containers, position them where they get 4–6 hours of direct sun daily.

Soil & Planting

  • Soil Type: Well-draining soil rich in organic matter.

  • pH Range: 6.0–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).

  • Amendment Tips: Incorporate compost or aged manure before planting to improve drainage and fertility.

  • Planting Time:

    • Fall (September–November): Best time for lush growth and extended bloom through winter and early spring.

    • Early Spring (February–March): Second planting window if overwintered plants decline.

Watering

  • Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy.

  • Water deeply 2–3 times per week, adjusting for rainfall.

  • In containers, water more frequently since they dry out faster.

  • Avoid overhead watering when possible — drip irrigation helps prevent fungal issues.

Fertilizing

  • Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) at planting.

  • Supplement every 4–6 weeks with a liquid bloom booster (like 10-30-20) during active growth.

  • Over-fertilizing with nitrogen can lead to more leaves than flowers.

Blooming & Maintenance

  • Deadheading (removing spent blooms) encourages continuous flowering.

  • Trim plants back by ⅓ mid-season if they become leggy or bloom slows — they’ll regrow quickly.

  • Regularly remove any yellowing leaves to improve airflow and prevent mildew.

Heat & Cold Tolerance

  • Cold: Tolerates light frost but not hard freezes. Protect with frost cloth below 30°F.

  • Heat: Traditional alyssum struggles in Louisiana summers, but newer hybrids like Lobularia 'Snow Princess' or ‘Blushing Princess’ thrive in hot, humid conditions and bloom nearly year-round.

Growing in Containers

  • Use well-draining potting mix with perlite or coarse sand.

  • Ensure containers have drainage holes.

  • Great for hanging baskets, borders, and pollinator pots.

  • Pair beautifully with petunias, calibrachoas, lantanas, or dwarf salvias.

Pollinators & Companions

  • Excellent pollinator plant — attracts bees, hoverflies, and butterflies.

  • Works well as a companion plant for vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers by attracting beneficial insects.

  • Combine with other Zone 9 favorites like Verbena, Marigold, and Blue Daze for vibrant seasonal color.

Common Problems

Problem Cause Solution
Yellowing leaves Overwatering or poor drainage Allow soil to dry slightly between waterings
Powdery mildew High humidity, overcrowding Increase spacing and airflow, apply neem oil if needed
Aphids or whiteflies Warm, humid weather Use insecticidal soap or neem oil spray weekly until resolved
