Lobularia Easy Breezy Purple

‘Easy Breezy Purple’ is a compact, mounding annual from the Lobularia maritima family (often referred to as sweet alyssum). It produces masses of small, fragrant lavender-purple blooms that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. This modern hybrid variety is more heat-tolerant than traditional alyssum, maintaining continuous bloom through the warm months with minimal maintenance. Its fine-textured foliage forms a neat, rounded shape ideal for edging or mixed containers.

Originally derived from Mediterranean coastal regions, Lobularia maritima thrives in mild, maritime climates but has been bred for resilience in warmer areas like the Gulf Coast.

Sun and Water Requirements

• Light: Full sun to partial shade; in Zone 9, provide afternoon shade during peak summer heat to prevent stress.

• Water: Moderate; prefers consistently moist but well-draining soil. Avoid waterlogging, as overly wet conditions can cause root rot. Once established, it tolerates short dry periods but benefits from regular watering during extended heat.

Uses
Excellent for borders, hanging baskets, rock gardens, window boxes, and pollinator-friendly plantings. Its long-lasting blooms make it a great filler between larger perennials and a strong choice for seasonal color.

Growing Tips for Zone 9 (Louisiana & Gulf Coast)

• Plant in late winter or early spring after the last frost. It performs best from February through early summer and may reflush in fall.

• In extreme summer heat, it may slow bloom production; lightly trim back to encourage new growth and remove spent flowers.

• Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.

• Fertilize monthly with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to sustain continuous flowering.

• Combine with heat-tolerant companions such as angelonia, lantana, or calibrachoa for extended color displays.
