Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is abushy, upright, herbaceous perennial herb that can grow up to 39 in tall. Lemon balm has been used medicinally since at least 50–80 BC. The ancient Greeks and Romans used it medicinally, and Greek scholar Theophrastus recorded information about it in 300 BC. In the Middle Ages, it was used to regulate sleep, appetite, and digestion, reduce anxiety, and relieve pain.
