Lemon Ball Sedum
Lemon Ball Sedum
Plant name: Lemon Ball Sedum
Scientific name: Sedum mexicanum ‘Lemon Ball’
Plant description:
Lemon Ball Sedum is a low-growing, trailing succulent valued for its bright chartreuse foliage and soft, cascading habit. This fast-spreading stonecrop forms dense mats of fine-textured stems that spill gracefully over container edges or spread across the soil surface. Its vibrant foliage provides consistent color contrast in mixed plantings and remains attractive throughout the growing season.
Flower description:
Small, star-shaped yellow flowers may appear in summer, rising slightly above the foliage. While the blooms add seasonal interest, the plant is primarily grown for its vivid foliage color and trailing form.
Leaf description:
Leaves are small, rounded to needle-like, and fleshy with a saturated lemon-lime tone. The dense arrangement of leaves along slender stems creates a soft, mounded or trailing appearance. Color remains brightest in full sun.
Deciduous or evergreen:
Evergreen to semi-evergreen in mild climates; may experience dieback in colder regions and regrow from the base.
USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 7–11.
Mature height and width:
Typically 4–8 inches tall and 12–24 inches wide, spreading outward and cascading when grown in containers.
Landscape uses:
Ideal for rock gardens, groundcover, edging, container arrangements, hanging baskets, and water-wise landscapes. Its trailing habit makes it an effective spiller plant in mixed containers and raised beds.
Native range:
Sedum mexicanum is native to Mexico; ‘Lemon Ball’ is a cultivated ornamental selection.
Sun exposure:
Performs best in full sun to partial shade. Strong sunlight intensifies foliage color and maintains compact growth. Reduced light may result in softer growth and less vibrant color.
Water requirements:
Prefers well-drained soil and light watering. Allow soil to dry between waterings. Once established, it tolerates dry conditions. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils.
Pests and problems:
Generally low maintenance with minimal pest concerns. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline and may lead to root rot. Good drainage is essential for long-term health.
Heat and sun tolerance: Cold tolerance:
Handles heat and strong sun exposure well when soil drains freely. Moderately cold hardy within its recommended zones; extended freezing temperatures may cause foliage dieback, with regrowth in spring.
Growing tips:
Plant in sandy or gravelly soil with excellent drainage. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can cause overly soft growth. Trim lightly to maintain shape or encourage branching if needed. Position where the bright chartreuse foliage can contrast with darker plants or complement flowering varieties in containers and borders.
