Lavender Phenomenal PP# 24193

Lavender Phenomenal PP# 24193

Plant name: Lavender ‘Phenomenal’ PP#24193

Scientific name: Lavandula × intermedia ‘Niko’ PP#24193

Plant description:
Lavender ‘Phenomenal’ is a hardy lavandin selection bred for improved tolerance to heat, humidity, and cold compared to traditional lavender varieties. This semi-woody perennial forms a dense, rounded mound of aromatic silver foliage and produces long flower stems held well above the leaves. Its uniform growth and resilience make it a dependable choice for both formal plantings and informal borders.

Flower description:
Tall, slender spikes of violet-blue flowers rise above the foliage in late spring to early summer, with repeat bloom possible under favorable conditions. The flowers are highly fragrant and attractive to bees and other pollinators. Stems are sturdy and suitable for cutting, drying, and crafting.

Leaf description:
Leaves are narrow, linear, and silvery-gray with a soft texture. The foliage is strongly aromatic and retains its color throughout the growing season. The compact mound provides year-round structure in suitable climates.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Evergreen to semi-evergreen in mild climates; may experience partial dieback in colder regions but regrows from woody stems.

USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 5–9.

Mature height and width:
Typically 24–30 inches tall in bloom and 24–30 inches wide, forming a rounded shrub-like mound.

Landscape uses:
Suitable for borders, herb gardens, pollinator plantings, mass plantings, and low hedges. Its tidy shape works well in formal layouts, while its fragrance and flower stems make it valuable for cutting and drying. Also effective in water-wise landscapes.

Native range:
Lavandula × intermedia is a hybrid derived from Mediterranean species; ‘Phenomenal’ is a cultivated ornamental selection.

Sun exposure:
Requires full sun for best performance. Strong sunlight promotes compact growth, abundant flowering, and intense fragrance.

Water requirements:
Prefers well-drained soil and moderate watering during establishment. Once established, it tolerates dry conditions. Avoid heavy, poorly drained soils that retain excess moisture.

Pests and problems:
Generally low maintenance. Root rot is the most common issue, typically caused by poor drainage. Good airflow reduces the risk of fungal problems.

Heat and sun tolerance: Cold tolerance:
Demonstrates strong tolerance to heat and humidity compared to many lavender varieties. Cold hardy within its recommended zones, with improved winter survival when planted in well-drained soil.

Growing tips:
Plant in sharply drained soil, preferably sandy or gravelly, to prevent excess moisture around the roots. Avoid heavy fertilization, which can reduce fragrance and weaken stems. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage additional blooms. Provide adequate spacing for airflow to support long-term plant health.
