Lantana - 'New Gold'
Lantana - 'New Gold'
Plant name: Lantana ‘New Gold’
Scientific name: Lantana × hybrida ‘New Gold’
Plant description:
Lantana ‘New Gold’ is a low-growing, spreading lantana selected for its bright flower color and extended bloom period. This vigorous perennial forms a dense mound that gradually spreads, creating a solid carpet of foliage and flowers. Unlike many seed-producing lantanas, ‘New Gold’ is valued for its consistent flowering and reduced fruit set, which allows energy to remain focused on bloom production.
Flower description:
Clusters of small, tubular flowers open in vibrant golden yellow and maintain a consistent tone without color changes as they age. Blooms appear continuously from late spring through frost under favorable conditions. The nectar-rich flowers attract butterflies and other pollinators throughout the growing season.
Leaf description:
Leaves are medium green, oval, and slightly rough in texture with a lightly aromatic quality when crushed. Foliage forms a dense, spreading canopy that provides strong ground coverage.
Deciduous or evergreen:
Evergreen in frost-free climates; may become deciduous or die back in colder regions and regrow from the base in spring.
USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 8–11 as a perennial; grown as an annual in colder climates.
Mature height and width:
Typically 12–24 inches tall and 3–6 feet wide, forming a broad, spreading groundcover.
Landscape uses:
Ideal for groundcover, mass plantings, slopes, borders, and large containers. Its spreading habit makes it suitable for erosion control and filling wide planting areas with continuous color.
Native range:
Lantana species are native to tropical regions of the Americas; ‘New Gold’ is a cultivated hybrid selection.
Sun exposure:
Requires full sun for best flowering and compact growth. Insufficient light can reduce bloom production and lead to looser growth.
Water requirements:
Prefers well-drained soil and moderate watering during establishment. Once established, it tolerates dry conditions and performs well with minimal supplemental irrigation. Avoid consistently waterlogged soil.
Pests and problems:
Generally low maintenance. May occasionally attract aphids or lace bugs. Good airflow and proper spacing reduce disease pressure.
Heat and sun tolerance: Cold tolerance:
Highly tolerant of heat and strong sun exposure. Sensitive to hard frost; freezing temperatures may cause dieback, with regrowth occurring from the base in suitable climates.
Growing tips:
Plant in well-drained soil with adequate spacing to allow for spreading. Light trimming during the growing season helps maintain a compact shape and encourages additional blooms. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can promote foliage at the expense of flowers. Position in the sunniest available location to maximize flowering and maintain dense coverage.
