Lamb’s Ear is a low-growing, perennial ground cover known for its soft, fuzzy, silvery-gray leaves that resemble a lamb’s ear. This drought-tolerant plant forms a dense mat of foliage, making it an excellent choice for edging, rock gardens, and borders. In late spring to early summer, it produces tall flower spikes with small purple to pink flowers, which attract pollinators like bees. Some cultivars are grown mainly for their foliage, with minimal flowering.

Grow Zone

  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 4-9

  • Thrives in hot, dry climates, but can tolerate cooler conditions with proper drainage

Height & Width

  • Height: 6-12 inches (foliage), up to 18-24 inches (flower spikes)

  • Width: 12-36 inches, spreading gradually through rhizomes

Uses

  • Ground cover in dry, well-drained areas

  • Borders and edging for a soft, textured contrast

  • Rock gardens and xeriscaping

  • Container gardening for ornamental foliage

  • Sensory gardens, as the soft leaves are appealing to touch

  • Pollinator gardens, attracting bees to its flowers

Native Range

Lamb’s Ear is native to Turkey, Armenia, and Iran, where it thrives in dry, rocky soils and open grasslands. It is well-adapted to poor soil conditions and drought.

Growing Requirements

Light

  • Prefers full sun, but can tolerate partial shade in hot climates

Soil

  • Well-draining, sandy, or rocky soil

  • Prefers dry to moderately moist conditions

  • Tolerates poor soils, but dislikes heavy clay or overly rich, fertilized soil

Watering

  • Drought-tolerant once established

  • Water sparingly, as excessive moisture can lead to root rot and fungal issues

  • Avoid overhead watering to prevent leaf rot

Fertilization

  • Minimal fertilization needed

  • Apply a light layer of compost in spring to boost growth

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Trim spent flower stalks after blooming to maintain appearance

  • Remove damaged or dead leaves to prevent fungal issues

  • Divide clumps every 2-3 years to control spread and encourage fresh growth
