Pink Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris)

Pink Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris)

Plant name: Pink Muhly Grass

Scientific name: Muhlenbergia capillaris

Plant description:
Pink Muhly Grass is a warm-season ornamental grass known for its fine texture and airy fall color. It forms a dense, fountain-shaped clump of narrow foliage that provides structure through the growing season and dramatic seasonal interest in autumn. This native grass is widely used in modern landscapes for mass plantings, borders, and low-maintenance designs.

Flower description:
In late summer to fall, soft pink to rosy-purple flower panicles rise above the foliage, forming a cloud-like haze around the plant. The blooms are airy and translucent, creating a mist effect that intensifies in full sun. Flowering typically lasts several weeks, and the plumes gradually fade to a tan buff color that remains attractive into winter.

Leaf description:
Leaves are slender, linear, and arching, typically medium green during the growing season. The foliage emerges in spring and forms a tight, upright clump before softening into a graceful mound. In cooler climates, leaves may take on bronze or straw tones as temperatures drop.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Semi-evergreen to deciduous depending on climate. In colder regions it goes fully dormant in winter; in milder climates it may retain some foliage.

USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 6–10

Mature height and width:
Typically 2–3 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide in foliage, with flower plumes extending to 3–4 feet tall.

Landscape uses:
Ideal for mass plantings, naturalized areas, coastal gardens, slopes, rain gardens, and xeriscape designs. Works well along driveways, in median plantings, and as a textural contrast in perennial beds. Its drought tolerance and native status make it suitable for low-maintenance landscapes and pollinator-supportive plantings.

Native range:
Eastern and southeastern United States

Sun exposure:
Full sun is required for best flowering and strongest pink color. Plants grown in partial shade produce fewer blooms and a looser habit.

Water requirements:
Moderate water during establishment. Once established, Pink Muhly Grass is drought tolerant and performs well in well-drained soils. Avoid consistently wet or poorly drained sites, especially in winter.

Pests and problems:
Generally resistant to pests and diseases. Root rot can occur in heavy, poorly drained soils. Overly rich soil may cause excessive foliage growth with reduced flowering.

Heat and sun tolerance:
Excellent heat and sun tolerance. Performs reliably in hot climates and reflective heat locations when planted in well-drained soil.

Cold tolerance:
Cold hardy to USDA Zone 6. In colder regions, foliage dies back after frost and regrows from the crown in spring. Mulching in colder climates can help protect roots during severe winter temperatures.

Growing tips:
Plant in a location with full sun and sharp drainage to encourage heavy flowering. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which promote leafy growth at the expense of blooms. Leave foliage standing through winter for seasonal interest and cut back to a few inches above the ground in late winter before new growth emerges. Space plants to allow airflow and maintain the natural fountain shape.
