Rose, Julia Child PP#18473

Rose, Julia Child PP#18473

Plant name: Rose, Julia Child PP#18473

Scientific name: Rosa ‘Julia Child’ PP#18473

Plant description:
Julia Child is a floribunda rose recognized for its strong disease resistance, compact growth habit, and consistent bloom production. This patented variety forms a dense, rounded shrub with sturdy stems and reliable repeat flowering throughout the growing season. It combines classic rose structure with improved landscape performance, making it suitable for both dedicated rose gardens and mixed perennial borders.

Flower description:
Blooms are fully double and rich butter-yellow, often 3–4 inches across. Flowers are borne in clusters, typical of floribunda roses, providing a steady display of color rather than isolated blooms. The petals hold their color well and carry a noticeable sweet, licorice-like fragrance. Flowering begins in late spring and continues in flushes through fall with proper care.

Leaf description:
Foliage is deep green with a glossy surface that enhances contrast with the yellow blooms. Leaves are moderately thick and show strong resistance to common foliar diseases, contributing to the plant’s clean appearance throughout the season.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Deciduous in colder climates; may remain semi-evergreen in milder regions

USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 5–9

Mature height and width:
Typically 3–4 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide, forming a compact, rounded shrub

Landscape uses:
Well suited for foundation plantings, mixed borders, rose beds, and container gardening. Its manageable size and cluster-blooming habit make it effective for mass plantings or as a mid-border focal point. The strong fragrance also makes it a good candidate for planting near patios and walkways.

Native range:
Cultivated garden hybrid developed in the United States

Sun exposure:
Full sun is essential for strong flowering and disease resistance. Provide at least six hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal performance.

Water requirements:
Water deeply and consistently, especially during establishment and active bloom cycles. Maintain evenly moist but well-drained soil. Avoid overhead irrigation to reduce the risk of leaf diseases.

Pests and problems:
Noted for strong resistance to black spot and mildew compared to many traditional roses. Aphids, spider mites, and Japanese beetles may occasionally appear. Proper air circulation and routine monitoring help maintain plant health.

Heat and sun tolerance:
Performs well in warm climates and maintains bloom quality in summer heat when provided adequate moisture. The flower color remains stable and does not fade excessively under strong sunlight.

Cold tolerance:
Hardy to USDA Zone 5. In colder regions, winter dieback may occur, but plants typically rebound in spring when properly pruned and protected during severe freezes.

Growing tips:
Plant in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and remove weak or damaged canes, encouraging strong new growth. Deadhead spent blooms to support continuous flowering. Apply a balanced rose fertilizer during the growing season to maintain steady bloom production without excessive leafy growth. Maintain a mulch layer around the root zone to conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch clear of the crown.
