Iris 'Beale Street' is a striking Louisiana iris known for its large, ruffled, velvety blooms in rich shades of deep purple with lighter veining and golden signals. The sword-like, upright foliage provides structure and interest even when not in bloom. Flowers appear in late spring to early summer and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Grow Zone:
USDA Hardiness Zones 6–10
Height and Width:
Typically grows 30 to 36 inches tall and spreads about 18 to 24 inches wide.
Light Requirements:
Plant in full sun to part shade. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch.
Soil Requirements:
Thrives in rich, acidic, consistently moist to wet soils. Ideal for planting near water features, in rain gardens, or areas that retain moisture. Avoid dry or sandy soil unless amended with organic matter and moisture retained.
Watering:
Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Louisiana irises like 'Beale Street' prefer wet or boggy conditions and will not tolerate drought.
Fertilization:
Apply a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10 or similar) in early spring as new growth begins and again after flowering to encourage strong root and rhizome development. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which promote excess foliage at the expense of blooms.
Mulching:
Mulch with pine straw or compost to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep the root zone cool. Avoid covering the rhizomes directly.
Pruning and Maintenance:
Remove spent flower stalks and yellowing leaves to maintain plant health and appearance. Cut back foliage in late fall or early winter to just above the crown.
Pests and Diseases:
Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract slugs or snails. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues such as leaf spot or rust.
Winter Care:
Hardy through Zone 6, but in colder areas, apply a protective mulch layer in late fall to insulate the roots. Remove mulch in early spring as growth resumes.
Bloom Time:
Late spring to early summer, typically April through May depending on region.
Uses:
Ideal for rain gardens, pond margins, boggy areas, and perennial beds where soil stays consistently moist. Its dramatic flowers also make it a standout in cut flower arrangements and native plant landscapes.
Native Range:
Louisiana and surrounding Gulf Coast regions of the southeastern United States. Iris 'Beale Street' is a cultivated selection of native Louisiana iris species.
