Ice Plant 'Jewel of Desert Grenade'
Ice Plant 'Jewel of Desert Grenade'
Plant name: Ice Plant ‘Jewel of Desert Grenade’
Scientific name: Delosperma hybrid ‘Jewel of Desert Grenade’
Plant description:
Ice Plant ‘Jewel of Desert Grenade’ is a compact, low-growing succulent perennial selected for vivid flower color and extended bloom performance. This cultivar forms a dense mat of fleshy foliage that spreads steadily without becoming invasive. It is widely used in rock gardens, slopes, and dry landscapes where strong color and drought tolerance are required.
Flower description:
Daisy-like flowers open in saturated red to deep magenta tones with a contrasting lighter center. Blooms measure approximately 1–2 inches across and open fully in bright sunlight. Flowering begins in late spring and continues into summer, with repeat blooming under favorable conditions.
Leaf description:
Leaves are small, cylindrical, and succulent with a smooth surface. Foliage is bright green and remains compact along trailing stems, creating a tight groundcover effect. The leaves store moisture, contributing to the plant’s drought tolerance.
Deciduous or evergreen:
Evergreen in milder climates; semi-evergreen to deciduous in colder regions
USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 5–9
Mature height and width:
Typically 4–6 inches tall and spreading 12–18 inches wide, forming a low, dense mat
Landscape uses:
Suitable for rock gardens, retaining walls, slopes, gravel beds, and xeriscape plantings. Effective as a groundcover in sunny areas with well-drained soil. Performs well in containers and trough gardens where drainage is sharp.
Native range:
Delosperma species are native to South Africa; ‘Jewel of Desert Grenade’ is a cultivated hybrid selection
Sun exposure:
Full sun is required for maximum flowering and compact growth. Insufficient light reduces bloom production and can cause stretched growth.
Water requirements:
Low water needs once established. Provide moderate moisture during establishment, then allow soil to dry between waterings. Excellent drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Pests and problems:
Generally low maintenance and resistant to most pests. Root rot is the primary concern in poorly drained or consistently wet soils.
Heat and sun tolerance:
Excellent tolerance of heat and direct sunlight. Maintains bloom color and foliage quality during hot, dry periods when drainage is adequate.
Cold tolerance:
Hardy to USDA Zone 5 when planted in well-drained soil. Winter wetness poses a greater risk than cold temperatures.
Growing tips:
Plant in sandy or gravelly soil with sharp drainage. Avoid heavy clay or overly rich soil, which can reduce vigor. Space plants to allow airflow and prevent moisture buildup around the crown. In colder climates, ensure excellent drainage before winter to improve survival. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a compact, tidy appearance.
