Delosperma 'Jewel of Desert Grenade', known as Ice Plant, is a vibrant, low-growing succulent prized for its dazzling, daisy-like flowers and mat-forming habit. Native to South Africa, this hardy perennial is an excellent choice for adding long-lasting color to various garden settings.

Plant Description:

  • Foliage: Features small, fleshy, blue-green leaves that form a dense, evergreen mat. In cooler climates, the foliage may take on a burgundy hue in the fall.
  • Flowers: Boasts abundant, fiery red and magenta, daisy-like flowers approximately 2 inches (5 cm) wide. These vibrant blooms appear from late spring through the first frost, often covering the foliage entirely.

Growing Zones:

  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 5 to 10.

Mature Size:

  • Height: Reaches up to 4-6 inches (10-15 cm).
  • Width: Spreads vigorously to 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) or more.

Growing Conditions:

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun; at least 5 hours of direct sunlight daily is essential for prolific blooming.
  • Soil: Prefers dry, well-drained soils. Tolerates average to lean soils, including sandy and gravelly ones. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
  • Watering: Once established, it is drought-tolerant. Water sparingly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
  • Fertilization: Generally does not require fertilization. In poor soils, a light application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring can promote vigorous growth and flowering.

Uses in Landscaping:

  • Ground Cover: Its mat-forming habit makes it ideal for covering bare spots, providing vibrant color and suppressing weeds.
  • Rock Gardens: Complements rocky landscapes with its low-growing form and bright blooms.
  • Borders and Edging: Provides a neat, colorful edge along walkways and garden beds.
  • Containers: Suitable for containers, adding a splash of color to patios and balconies.
  • Erosion Control: Effective in stabilizing soil on slopes due to its spreading nature.

Native Range: Delosperma species are native to South Africa, thriving in arid and semi-arid regions with well-draining soils.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Pruning: Deadheading spent flowers is unnecessary, as the plant is self-cleaning. However, trimming back in early spring can encourage denser growth and more prolific blooming.
  • Pest and Disease Control: Generally pest-free and disease-resistant. Ensure good air circulation to prevent potential fungal issues.
  • Winter Care: In colder zones (below USDA zone 5), consider providing winter protection, such as mulching, to safeguard the roots from freezing temperatures.
