Hoya 'Hindu Rope' Variegated (Hoya carnosa 'Compacta Variegata') is a striking, slow-growing, tropical evergreen with thick, twisted, and contorted leaves. The leaves display a mix of creamy white, light green, and dark green, giving it a distinctive, rope-like appearance. This plant produces clusters of star-shaped, fragrant pinkish-white flowers, typically in late spring or summer.

Growing Conditions:

  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 10–12 (Can be grown as a houseplant in cooler zones)

  • Height: 12–24 inches (trailing vines can extend to 2–4 feet)

  • Width: 12–24 inches

  • Light Requirements: Bright, indirect light. Tolerates some morning sun but avoid harsh, direct afternoon rays, which can scorch the leaves.

  • Soil: Well-draining, airy soil—ideal mix includes orchid bark, perlite, and peat-based potting soil.

  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Reduce watering in the winter months.

  • Humidity: Prefers 60% or higher. Benefits from occasional misting or placement near a humidifier.

  • Temperature: Thrives between 60–85°F (15–29°C). Avoid exposure to temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

  • Fertilization: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength.

Uses:

  • Indoor ornamental plant (ideal for hanging baskets or shelves)

  • Air purifier (removes indoor toxins)

  • Gift plant due to its unique foliage and trailing growth habit

Native Range:

Native to Southeast Asia and Australia, where it grows as an epiphytic vine in tropical forests.
