Cuban Oregano (Plectranthus amboinicus)
Plant Description:
Cuban Oregano is a semi-succulent, aromatic perennial herb with thick, fleshy, scalloped leaves and a strong, pungent scent reminiscent of true oregano. The leaves are typically light green and sometimes edged with cream or white in variegated varieties. It produces small, tubular, lavender to pale purple flowers on upright spikes, though it is more often grown for its foliage.
Grow Zone:
USDA Zones 9 to 11. In Zone 9, Cuban Oregano can be grown outdoors year-round with protection from hard freezes or brought indoors during winter.
Height and Width:
Grows 12 to 24 inches tall and spreads 18 to 36 inches wide. It tends to sprawl and can trail over the edges of containers or raised beds.
Uses:
Cuban Oregano is used as a culinary herb in Caribbean, Indian, and African cuisines. It can substitute for traditional oregano in recipes and is often used in meat dishes, soups, and stews. It also has traditional medicinal uses for respiratory and digestive ailments and is valued as a fragrant ornamental in herb gardens and containers. Its pungent scent helps repel insects and deer.
Native Range:
Believed to be native to parts of Africa and Asia, though it is widely naturalized in tropical and subtropical regions around the world.
Sun Requirements:
Thrives in partial to full sun. In hot, humid climates like Zone 9, it performs best with morning sun and afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch.
Water Requirements:
Requires moderate water and prefers well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established but should not be overwatered. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot.
