Gomphrena Pulchella
Gomphrena Pulchella
Plant name: Gomphrena pulchella, 'Truffula Pink'
Scientific name: Gomphrena pulchella
Plant description:
Gomphrena pulchella is a heat-tolerant flowering annual known for its airy structure and long-lasting blooms. It forms a branching, open plant with slender stems that create movement and texture in garden beds. This species is valued for extended summer performance and its ability to maintain color through warm, dry conditions. It works well in informal plantings and mixed borders where a lighter, natural look is desired.
Flower description:
Small, clover-like flower heads in shades of bright pink to magenta are held above the foliage on wiry stems. The papery bracts retain their color for an extended period and are suitable for fresh or dried arrangements. Blooming begins in early summer and continues until frost under favorable conditions.
Leaf description:
Leaves are narrow, oval to lance-shaped, and medium green with a slightly soft texture. Foliage remains relatively compact at the base while flower stems extend upward, creating a layered effect.
Deciduous or evergreen:
Annual
USDA grow zones:
Grown as an annual in all USDA zones
Mature height and width:
Typically 18–24 inches tall and 12–18 inches wide, with flower stems extending slightly above the foliage
Landscape uses:
Suitable for mixed annual beds, pollinator gardens, cutting gardens, and meadow-style plantings. Effective when planted in groups to create consistent blocks of color. Its upright stems add vertical interest without overwhelming neighboring plants.
Native range:
Native to South America
Sun exposure:
Full sun is required for strong stems and consistent bloom production. Reduced light may lead to weaker growth and fewer flowers.
Water requirements:
Moderate water during establishment. Once established, it tolerates short dry periods and performs best in well-drained soil. Avoid prolonged waterlogged conditions.
Pests and problems:
Generally low maintenance. May occasionally experience aphids or spider mites under stress. Good drainage and proper spacing reduce the risk of fungal issues.
Heat and sun tolerance:
Excellent tolerance of heat and direct sunlight. Maintains flower color and structure during extended warm weather.
Cold tolerance:
Sensitive to frost. Growth slows in cool conditions, and plants will not survive freezing temperatures.
Growing tips:
Plant in well-drained soil and provide adequate spacing to encourage airflow and branching. Light pinching early in the season can promote a fuller plant. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization, which can reduce flowering and encourage excessive foliage growth. Regular harvesting of blooms for arrangements can also stimulate additional flower production.
