Geranium Citrosum 'Van Leenii,' commonly known as the Mosquito Plant or Citronella Geranium, is a tender perennial with deeply lobed, fragrant green leaves that release a citrus scent when brushed or crushed. While it is marketed for repelling mosquitoes, its effectiveness is modest without directly rubbing the leaves on the skin. It produces delicate, pale lavender-pink flowers during the warmer months.

Grow Zone:
USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11 (can be grown as an annual in cooler zones or overwintered indoors).

Height and Width:

  • Height: 2 to 3 feet
  • Width: 2 to 3 feet

Uses:

  • Ornamental plant for garden beds, containers, or patios
  • Fragrant foliage for natural insect deterrent (when crushed)
  • Indoor plant during winter months in cooler climates

Native Range:
A cultivated hybrid, not naturally occurring in the wild, but derived from species native to South Africa.

Growing Conditions:

  • Light: Full sun to partial shade (best fragrance and growth in full sun)
  • Soil: Well-draining, moderately fertile soil (pH 6.0-7.5)
  • Water: Moderate; allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings to prevent root rot
  • Maintenance:
    • Prune regularly to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth
    • Deadhead spent flowers for continuous blooming
    • Fertilize lightly every 4-6 weeks during the growing season
