Gaura, "Siskiyou Pink"

Gaura, "Siskiyou Pink"

Plant name: Gaura ‘Siskiyou Pink’
Scientific name: Oenothera lindheimeri ‘Siskiyou Pink’ (syn. Gaura lindheimeri ‘Siskiyou Pink’)

Plant description:
Gaura ‘Siskiyou Pink’ is a graceful, airy perennial known for its long bloom season and relaxed, natural form. Slender stems rise above a compact basal clump, creating a light, open structure that moves easily with the breeze. This cultivar is valued for its soft pink flowers and ability to add height and motion to mixed plantings without creating visual heaviness. Its fine texture blends seamlessly into contemporary borders, cottage gardens, and drought-tolerant landscapes.

Flower description:
Butterfly-like blossoms appear along tall, wiry stems from late spring through fall. The flowers open in soft pink tones that deepen as temperatures fluctuate, creating subtle shifts in color throughout the season. Each bloom features delicate petals that hover above the foliage, giving the plant a floating appearance that enhances layered planting designs and pollinator-focused gardens.

Leaf description:
Leaves form a low rosette at the base, emerging narrow and lance-shaped with occasional reddish mottling. The foliage provides a grounded base that contrasts with the airy flowering stems. As the plant matures, new shoots emerge from the crown, maintaining a fresh appearance through extended bloom periods.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Herbaceous perennial; typically deciduous with seasonal dieback in colder climates.

USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 5–9.

Mature height and width:
Typically reaches 24–36 inches tall and 18–24 inches wide, forming an upright yet loosely branched silhouette.

Landscape uses:
Ideal for naturalistic borders, pollinator gardens, and mixed perennial plantings where movement and soft texture are desired. Works well along pathways, in prairie-style designs, or interplanted with ornamental grasses and compact shrubs. Suitable for containers where a vertical accent with a light presence is needed.

Native range:
Derived from a species native to central and southern North America.

Sun exposure:
Requires full sun for best flowering and a sturdy growth habit. Ample light encourages compact branching and extended bloom performance.

Water requirements:
Prefers well-drained soil with moderate watering during establishment. Mature plants show good tolerance to dry conditions but benefit from occasional deep watering during prolonged heat.

Pests and problems:
Generally low-maintenance with few pest concerns. Overly rich soil or excessive fertilization can lead to floppy growth. Poor drainage may reduce plant longevity, making site selection important for long-term performance.

Heat and sun tolerance:
Adapted to bright sun and warm conditions, maintaining bloom production even during extended periods of heat. Good airflow around the plant helps keep stems strong and foliage clean.

Cold tolerance:
Hardy within its recommended zones. Foliage and stems typically die back after frost, with new growth emerging from the crown in spring.

Growing tips:
Plant in lean, well-drained soil to maintain a compact, upright habit. Avoid heavy pruning during the growing season; instead, trim lightly to encourage fresh flowering stems. Leaving some space between plants allows air circulation and enhances the natural, airy character that defines this cultivar. Applying a light layer of mulch helps regulate soil temperature while keeping the crown dry.
