Gaura ‘Baby Butterfly Dark Pink’ (Oenothera lindheimeri) is a compact and hardy perennial known for its abundant and delicate, deep pink flowers that resemble butterflies in flight. It’s an easy-to-grow plant, making it a great choice for both experienced and beginner gardeners.

 Plant Description:

- Foliage: The leaves are lance-shaped, narrow, and medium green with a slightly reddish or purple tint, particularly on young foliage and stems. The foliage is typically more compact than that of other Gaura varieties.

- Flowers: 'Baby Butterfly Dark Pink' produces masses of dark pink, star-shaped flowers with four petals, resembling small butterflies. These flowers bloom on long, wispy stems and appear continuously from late spring through fall.

- Growth Habit: A bushy, compact, and clump-forming perennial with an airy, graceful appearance. The plant's slender, upright stems sway gently in the wind.

 Growing Conditions:

- Hardiness Zones: USDA zones 6-10.

- Height: 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm).

- Width: 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm).

- Sun Exposure: Prefers full sun to light shade. It thrives in sunny locations, though it can tolerate some partial shade, especially in hotter climates.

- Soil: Well-drained, sandy, or loamy soil. Gaura is drought-tolerant once established and does best in soils that aren’t too rich, as overly fertile soils may cause it to become leggy.

- Watering: Water regularly until the plant is established. Afterward, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.

 Planting and Care Tips:

- Planting Time: Plant in spring or fall. Ensure good soil drainage to prevent root rot, especially in heavier soils.

- Spacing: Space plants about 12 to 18 inches apart to allow for air circulation and healthy growth.

- Fertilization: Minimal fertilization is needed. If you choose to fertilize, use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring, but avoid overfeeding, as it can lead to leggy growth.

- Pruning: Cut back spent flower stems to promote new growth and encourage additional flowering. Trim the plant back by about one-third in early spring to maintain its compact form and encourage a flush of fresh growth.

- Winter Care: In colder climates (zone 6), mulching around the base of the plant can help protect the roots during winter. In warmer zones, it remains evergreen.

 Uses:

- Borders and Edging: The compact size and long blooming period make 'Baby Butterfly Dark Pink' ideal for borders and edging in cottage gardens, perennial beds, or wildflower gardens.

- Containers: It’s perfect for container gardening, where its airy appearance and vibrant flowers can bring a splash of color to patios, balconies, or terraces.

- Pollinator Gardens: The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it an excellent addition to pollinator-friendly spaces.

- Drought-Tolerant Gardens: Gaura’s ability to withstand dry conditions makes it suitable for xeriscaping and water-wise gardens.

 Native Range:

Gaura (Oenothera lindheimeri) is native to North America, specifically to the south-central United States, including Texas and Louisiana. It naturally occurs in prairies and open woodlands, which explains its tolerance to heat, drought, and poor soils.
